Walmart launches fresh food traceability strategy

FOLLOWING the launch of its packaged vegetable traceability program last year, Walmart announced yesterday that it has further expanded the initiative to fresh meat and more seafood products.

According to the Walmart Fresh Traceability Project Strategy & Plan released yesterday, Walmart hopes that its self-owned brand Marketside’s traceable packaged fresh meat will take up 50 percent of the total packaged fresh meat sales by the end of 2020.

Traceable seafood will account for 12.5 percent of the total seafood sales and traceable packaged vegetables will account for 40 percent of the total packaged vegetables sales by the end of 2020.

The company said that customers who scan the QR codes on the packages of vegetables, meat, and seafood products could view the records of when and where the food is planted or raised, as well as information about how it is processed and transported through the supply chain.

“Fresh food traceability means increasing the transparency of the food supply chain and bringing exceptional products to our customers through the use of technology such as IoT, big data and mobile apps,” said Winstone Chee, Walmart China’s vice president for fresh foods hypermarket merchandising.

Chee said that in order to win customers’ hearts, Walmart has developed a fresh food traceability system based on information on suppliers and their resources to manage quality from the very beginning.

Walmart’s vegetable traceability program has now covered more than 300 stores throughout China since last May, according to Chee.
